Ponies for Hire in Altamont, New York, offers a pony rides for children at a variety of events. Our business began when our owner was just a young girl who was inspired by her love of horses.
Our owner's love of animals started when she was 8 with her dad's horse, Sarge. After Sarge passed away, she wanted a horse of her own. Her dad brought home a donkey, and later an old stud pony she named, Trigger. She brought the pony to church where her father was the auctioneer and gave pony rides for 10 cents. This was the start of Ponies For Hire. That was 1975, and our owner was just 10 years old.
The following year her father brought home a young mare named Sandy because she was the color of sand. Our owner gave pony rides at the church and local firehouse for a family fun day. A year later, her first two ponies had a baby. The baby was born on the Fourth of July so she named her Firecracker.
Expansion of Ponies For Hire
By age 11, our owner was giving pony rides at the church, the firehouse, and birthday parties. Her family didn't have a horse trailer when she booked her first birthday party, so she rode Sandy 5 miles to the party and back. Knowing she wouldn't be able to ride the pony to every function, her dad made a plywood box to fit on top of his truck to haul the ponies. When she turned 16, our owner acquired her driver's license and purchased an old U-Haul™ trailer. She borrowed her mother's station wagon to transport her horses to events.
Ponies For Hire Today
Today, we own a number of ponies along with two trucks and horse trailers to accommodate our pony ride services. (The owner's daughter is our second driver—both are at events every weekend.) We also bring baby goats, a lamb, and chicks.
